As organizations add locations, cloud platforms, applications, security controls, and remote users, device-by-device network management becomes harder to govern. Policy can drift, changes take longer, visibility fragments, and troubleshooting crosses multiple tools and providers.

Software-defined networking separates more of the control and policy logic from individual network devices. Used appropriately, it can create a more consistent way to manage traffic, segmentation, configuration, and service changes. It also introduces design, integration, governance, and operational decisions that must be addressed before deployment.
